Youth Motivational Maps

Understand what Motivates Young People

Give them the skills and direction they need to truly develop and thrive.

As a teacher, parent, or coach, do you ever...

… wonder how to engage underachieving students in learning that enables them to achieve their best?

… struggle to know how to develop self-esteem, self-awareness and resilience in young people?

… feel frustrated when a talented young person suddenly disengages and becomes uncooperative?

Motivation Declines if Left Untended

Children are born with a tremendous amount of motivation, which helps them to grow and learn. However, as children progress through childhood and into adolescence, this motivation can reduce.

Motivation is a key factor in a person’s success and overall happiness, so having an understanding of what motivates children that you come into contact with, will help you to foster motivation within themselves and impact on their overall success and happiness.

Unlocking Potential with Youth Motivational Maps®

Around 2000, James Sale, a former Deputy Heath Teacher, created a tool to measure and increase motivation. It was the achievement of a long-held ambition, when he’d seen the difference motivation made to the way young people engaged, collaborated and achieved in school.

The tool is Motivational Maps, a self-perception inventory (like Belbin), which enables people to understand exactly what motivates them, gain more self-awareness and be equipped to create better outcomes by aligning their direction, skills and motivation.  This became an ISO-accredited, user-friendly tool, used globally in organisations of all sizes.

A second Map was subsequently co-created with another former teacher, Mark Turner, to create the same benefits for young people and enabling them to be more involved, confident, focused and to achieve more of their potential. That second Map is called the Youth Motivational Map. Like it’s ‘grown-up’ version, the Youth Map is used globally, and has created a fantastic difference for young people, their parents, teachers and mentors.

The Youth Maps are designed for 7 – 18 year olds in an educational setting. The results are provided via 3 reports (young person, parent and teacher), with two type of young person report: the Standardised Report - designed for Key 7-11, and the Detailed Report - designed for 12-18.  The Adult Motivational Map is designed for those in a work context, typically 18 + years of age, and has one report.
